DIY Pantry

Why is it needful to have a pantry? For me, it comes down to a few things.
1-I'm lazy and don't want to go to the store all the time. I would rather just go to my pantry.
2-I can save money on groceries by purchasing a couple extra of the things we use most when they go on sale.
3- The biggest reason is this quote: President Ezra Taft Benson: "I ask you earnestly, have you provided for your family a year's supply of food, clothing, and where possible, fuel? The revelation to produce and store food may be as essential to our temporal welfare today as boarding the ark was to the people in the days of Noah." General Conference October 1987.

And if that doesn't convince you, how about this from the WSJ (Wall Street Journal) last week about how our nation's Electricity Grid has been penetrated by spies. Yup. Without electricity your credit cards don't work, your internet bank transfer doesn't work, your ATM card doesn't work. And neither do those scanning machines at the grocery store. It's going to be a pain to buy food or get something to eat if you don't have any on hand for a natural disaster or manmade disaster.

Now, that scare theory is not what I navigate my life by. But, it's a thought to consider. Things happen. It's good to be prepared.

So, now back to how to get a pantry if you don't have one so that you can store some of your favorite yummies.
Here's what ours looks like:

The house we are renting doesn't have a pantry.

So our pantry is a "wardrobe" cabinet from Home Depot. It's a beast to move. The thing is so heavy. But we moved it anyway and it's been such a great thing for our kitchen. It has a key that locks it closed (so my kiddos can't play with cans of food) and it has a few shelves on one side and across the top. The "wardrobe" part where you would hang clothes is open.
On that side I use this "shoe shelf" (from Target-I think?) to keep things organized. I also use some vertically stacked cardboard boxes next to it (not in the photo) to created separated space.

My favorite shelves are these:
My sister bought them at the Smith's Marketplace in SLC when we lived there. I'm sure you can find them other places too. I love them because you can stack things above and use the space below for different things. They are especially great in a deep space like this wardrobe is.
This soup rack is a recent addition.  I've always just stacked cans before.  I'm still deciding how much I like it.  It isn't a big one that rotates old to new cans.

This past week I realized that we've been in our "new" (rental) house for about 9 months and it is time to rotate everything.  Regardless of how you set up your pantry, be sure that you take the time every so often to make sure the older things are the ones you are eating so your food doesn't spoil waiting for you to use it.  Otherwise, that idea about saving money buying a few extra doesn't work so well.

Have fun creating your own DIY pantry. Talking about This Little Food Project is making me hungry!

Bird's Nest Cookies

Some kids build blanket forts all over the house. My kids build blanket and pillow nests.  They are obsessed with birds right now.  So here are some bird's nest cookies from our house to yours. And a GREAT way to use up some of that Easter CANDY!

I have been organizing our DIY pantry (see this post) and noticed that we have a TON of peanut butter. So, it's time for peanut butter cookies with a Springtime twist.  Read on to see how to make a chocolate bird for your little cookie nest.

I used >this recipe. They turned out so soft and yummy. If you don't want to make a ton of one inch balls, just make bigger balls of dough and they make great nests.  I cooked them the same length of time. Some of our cookie balls were 2-3 inches big before they cooked.

The recipe calls for hershey kisses.  But chocolate eggs turn these cookies into little nests!  The cookies come out of the oven looking like little balls.  You just nestle these little chocolate eggs right down into them and they look so comfy!

If you are making these treats with kids, check out >these tips first.
Remember to have your chocolate unwrapped before they come out of the oven.  The chocolate goes on AS SOON AS they come out.

Here is a baby bird sitting with some little eggs.  Want to know how I made it?
It was an accident at first!  I accidently tipped a cookie with a kiss over when I was transferring the cookies to the cooling rack.  When I picked it up the top was bent over.  It looked just like a little bird!  So then I made a few more "accidents" on purpose.

Like this:
I used the back of a butter knife to first tip the top over to the left, and then to make a little feather stand up on top.  I was surprised how easy it was to "sculpt" the chocolate.

Just wait about 3-5 minutes after they come out of the oven to tip the top over.  The chocolate has to be melted enough for it to work.  But if you wait too long it is too melted and doesn't work as well.

Enjoy munching on This Little Project!

After-Hunt Games

We had our final Easter Egg hunt today with our loot bags.  (I know it's after Easter, but it was today anyway and I have no idea why.) Anyway, when we got home we found that several friends had put stickers into our claimed Easter eggs and we started a little game of Egg Memory.

All you do is hide a 6 sets of matching things under the dozen halves of plastic egg pieces. We used matching stickers.

Then you lift 2 at a time to see if you have made a match! You can also play this with sets of jelly bean colors, but we had already eaten enough sugar around here with the hunt.  This is a fun way to reuse what you already have and extend the fun.

Enjoy This Little Game!

Marshmallow Finger Puppets are YUMMY!

It's after Easter and there is so much sugar at our house. We decided to put on a little puppet show. There will be many stories told by these little creatures.

We used marshmallow shapes, Peeps, and Brach's marshmallowy treats. The pretzels make it easier to hold onto them.

We've got a good cast too, complete with scenery:

First we used coloring pencils and crayons...and then cutting and glue stick.

Here is the cast of the puppet show in action!  Since our story was after lunch and just before naptime, the end of the play was about taking a nap-perfect!  Jay had fun naming all the characters.  Kay said, "goodbye" to each cast member when it exited the "stage".
Perfect for little fingers :)

And when the story is over, the treat is on hand. The salty mixed with the sweet...YUMMY!
Happy storymaking with a Little Project treat.

100th day Party!!!

April 10th is the 100th day of the year, which mostly is an excuse to have a party around here.  Can you believe we are already 100 days into this year?  Don't worry, if you missed doing a party today you can pick another number. Tomorrow will be the 101st day of the year. There are a lot of fun activities you can do around a fun number.

For today I decided we would do 100 MINUTES of 100s. I didn't know how far we would get down my list of ideas. We didn't make it all the way so that way there are some things to do for next year. The ones with pictures are the ones we actually had time for in our 100 minutes. The rest are just in case they are useful to you. We didn't get to them...yet :)

Of course, we began at 1:00

Here are some ideas for your own NUMBER PARTY:
*Take 100 steps (counting as you go)
*Write up to 100 LINK
* Put 100 frogs on 10 lily pads

*sort 100 jelly beans
*Do the 50 states puzzle and name the 50 state capitals

*make the numbers all the way to 100 from Rummikub pieces (this is my favorite game so we have 2 sets-but we ran out of numbers towards the end. It turned out ok though. We used lifesavers for 0's and worked on it until our 100 minutes were up. You could also use UNO cards.)

*write 100

*Pile up 100 pennies and measure them.
*Write 100 words you can read/spell

*There are some fun songs to sing like these:

Happy 100 Day
(to the tune of "Happy Birthday to You")
Happy 100 days to us,
Happy 100 days to us,
Happy 100 days at ________ School,
Happy 100 days to us.

100 Days
(to the tune of "10 Little Indians")
10, 20, 30 days of school,
40, 50, 60 days of school,
70, 80, 90 days of school,
100 days of school!

Realizing that we are 100 days into the year makes me want to go check out my new year resolutions...time is zooming by!  Have fun counting This Little Project!
